LEGALLY BLIND ENTREPRENEURS SHOWCASE SKILLS AT DESTINY USA, CONTINUING CELEBRATION OF COMMISSION FOR THE BLIND’S 100TH ANNIVERSARY

Syracuse, NY, October 18, 2013 – The Syracuse Regional Office of the New York State Commission for the Blind (NYSCB) is continuing its year-long centennial recognition by honoring NYSCB’s service to blind individuals at Destiny USA on Saturday, October 19, 2013 from noon until 3 p.m.

“NYSCB strives to reach out to New Yorkers who are legally blind to help them reach their full potential and live independent lives,” said Amy Carreno, District Manager for the NYSCB’s Syracuse region. “Expert counseling, training and adaptive equipment can provide a strong foundation for success in helping clients to reach their employment goals, and Destiny USA on a Saturday afternoon is the perfect place for us to get the word out.”

There will be several demonstrations and displays featuring business owners who have successfully utilized NYSCB services to attain employment.  A DJ, a massage therapist who also creates individualized travel books, a hunting lodge owner, a flute player and her ensemble, an online candle seller, a Paralympic athlete, and two participants in NYSCB’s Business Enterprise Program will all be in attendance. The legally-blind participants are a testament to NYSCB’s success in helping the blind achieve their professional goals. A local guide dog school and puppies in training will also be on hand for guests to meet.

Destiny USA, managed by Syracuse-based Pyramid Management Group, previously arranged an interactive tour for students who are NYSCB consumers transitioning from school to work, and agreed to host the centennial celebration. 

“Destiny USA is proud to be to hosting the Centennial Celebration of the New York State Commission for the Blind in our Canyon area this Saturday,” said Rob Schoeneck, General Manager, Destiny USA. “Both Destiny and The Pyramid Management Group are honored to partner with this wonderful organization as they celebrate of 100 years of dedicated work in assisting their consumers in achieving greater independence.” 

The New York State Commission for the Blind is part of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. It provides comprehensive counseling, training, and vocational rehabilitation services to legally blind New York State residents of all ages in partnership with non-profit vision service organizations.
